Flexible, creative solutions to tutoring

I specialize in working with students who have learning differences. So I must be flexible with my teaching approach to accommodate the student's needs. With the help of both parents and students, I discover which methods work best. These methods include multi-sensory teaching, keeping the student engaged, positive reinforcement, encouraging student accountability, helping with motivation, and custom-made assignments.

The emotional aspect of doing math should not be underestimated. The majority of my students come to me with not-fun feelings about math, so I consider it part of my job to create a learning environment that feels safe, validating, comfortable, and whenever possible, enjoyable. I tend to take a casual, friendly attitude with my students. I also teach "head math" tricks, which makes doing math in your head easier. I find this to be vastly better than teaching "leg math," which is where you look at the problem and run away.
